Create a Destination

Create a Destination Decks don't need to be connected to the home; they may result in new vistas, private retreats and small nooks in the backyard.

Dreamy Urban Deck This ipe deck comprises a custom built steel planter with native and drought-resistant perennials and shrubs. Design by Groundworks, Inc..

Emphasizing the View The view was the first design variable in this elegant deck. Gardens designed by Madelyn Simon

Dreamy Deck At HGTV Dream Home 2012, the amusement deck comes with a spa with a view of Utah's wide-open spaces.

Naturally Pretty A colour palette of earthy reds and vibrant greens and invisible doors link interior spaces to the contemporary deck, making an expanded living space. Design by Linda Sullivan

Adaptable Deck This versatile outdoor area offers three different kinds of entertaining areas, based on the weather : a gathering place around the fire pit, a deck for sunny afternoons and a enclosed gazebo. Design by Robert Hursthouse

Blending Naturally Steep terrain needn't be a deterrent to outside living. This wonderful multi-level deck provides plenty of space for relaxing and entertaining, yet stays in tune with the rocky woodsy environs.

Nation Lounging This hot redwood deck pops from the glowing colored pergola. Add whimsy with dangling and hanging plants in many different colours and a wall of floating windows. Layout by Claudia Schmutzler

Cottage-Style Porch This late 19th century house was completely remodeled, including a gorgeous private porch that overlooks magnificent landscaping. A comfortable seating area overlooks the room and an outside rug anchors the primary seating area. Design by Ron Nathan

Contemporary Elements Warm, natural components such as redwood, plants and brick create this outdoor space cozy. The custom made brick pizza oven adds an element of fun to the space, which is ideal for family gatherings. Layout by Claudia Schmutzler

Cozy Cabana An octagonal cabana produces a comfy place for cold drinks and watching sunsets. Layout by Barry Dixon

A Bit of Bohemian In an artistic couple's garden, Jamie Durie created three pergolas for dining and lounging spaces. Each construction has a macrame roof made from hand-dyed ropes, where baskets of leaves and blossoms hang.

Vegetable Boardwalk For a couple who wanted a garage remodel so that they can develop their cooking-school-for-kids business, Jamie Durie created a "vegetable boardwalk" within their larger makeover. The vertical gardens greatly extend the amount of produce the couple can develop, and edibles are close the kitchen for easy care and harvest.

Sunbathing in the City The town seems like a world away in this urban rooftop garden, made by Adam Miller. Artificial turf surrounds the pergolas.

Contemporary Lounge All these neutrals operate together to create a sleek and cozy outdoor space. The hot redwood deck and pergola are emphasized with creamy neutrals from the furniture and stone elements such as the flame pit and walls. Design by Claudia Schmutzler

Sky-High Terrace Terraced amounts feature a small hot tub, amazing city views and even a potting shed. Layout by Jeff Tohl

Moveable Chairs Produced by Jamie Durie, this seating area — complete with its own shade — can be moved across the deck as needed.

Permanent Shade A cantilever roof with natural cedar bottom partially hues the dining area onto the HGTV Green Home 2011 deck also adds interest to the outside area.

Natural Oasis Beautiful plantings, colorful details and compact simplicity accent this Asian-style dining room, made by Jane Ellison.

Mountain Views At HGTV Dream Home 2011, ample decking provides plenty of areas to relax and enjoy the mountain views.

Mediterranean Dining This deck was extended to offer ample space for a dining table near the lavish infinity pool. Design by Jamie Durie

A Daybed to Understand A fabulous swinging daybed supplies resting space close to the kitchen and dining counter on this contemporary urban deck. A grade-level planter adds yearlong greenery. The arborvitae will fill out to make a green wall. Layout by Adam Miller

Floating Roof A pair of folding glass doors is the one thing dividing indoors and the exterior. The floating roof, suspended between two large trees, colors the inviting deck. A sunken deck for dining and shade-loving plants finishes this Seattle-inspired layout by Jamie Durie.

Creekside Retreat This timber pergola provides a relaxed oasis beside a creek. Rock plants and walls help define the distance. Design by Dan Berger

Building Green One of those eco-friendly components of HGTV Green Home 2012 is your barbecue courtyard. Designed of architect Steve Kemp's vision for a truly green layout, the outside space replaces the traditional backyard, which could have required major regrading of the site and the building of retaining walls. "Now the 'yard' is available to almost every room in the house, rather than being open to one or two chambers," he says.

Enormous Fun Within this wonderful makeover by landscape designer Ahmed Hassan, a custom made deck includes the family's open living room. Under the cedar pergola, custom daybeds encourage serious lounging (and napping).

Interesting on Every Level The deck provides a bird's-eye view of the multiple play areas and relaxing options within this gorgeous hardscape, perfect for entertaining and relaxing. Rock columns on the deck perimeter help unify the appearance.
